Youth Theatre Feeling A Lot Like Christmas!

Christmas has come early to the participants of the Ryan Centre Youth Theatre who are working hard through their current school break devising a piece of theatre that they will perform at the Castle Square, Stranraer on Wednesday 21 December as part of the Christmas celebrations.  The workshops are being led by Mona Keeling, freelance Drama Artist who is a regular tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD) and Music Specialist Ross Ramsay.   Mona will encourage the groups to develop text, music and movement from ideas and themes explored during the workshop sessions. Throughout the project the participants will be given the opportunity to learn and develop devising and performance skills, contribute ideas and work as a team.  The performance will reflect on how we celebrate Christmas and what is truly important to us at that time of year.
Mona said ‘I have been working with the group on and off for two years now, during this time I have seen the group grow and mature into young theatre makers. I am always impressed with their ability to express their own thoughts and feelings through performance.’

In February this year they enjoyed success when they created and performed a piece for the opening of the Castle Square.
Sarah, a member of the Youth Theatre said “I come to youth theatre because its fun, you can make some good friends. It has also given me a lot of confidence to speak out in a group and by myself and also to take part in new things. We have done a few shows in different places in the theatre, outdoors and in the local museum most of these performances we have written our own material instead of working from a script, its good because we get to have some input and create our own text and movement, Mona guides us along the way. It gives you real joy to perform your own work”
Look out for progress reports and performance details.

Holmes & Watson : The Farewell Tour

By Stuart Fortey

Sherlock Holmes is on a farewell lecture tour to demonstrate some of his greatest cases before taking a well-earned retirement. He is accompanied by Dr Watson, Inspector Lestrade and Mrs Hudson. Unfortunately, however, the set and props have been left behind in Hull, so Dr Watson has to improvise a set and props for the demanding Holmes, using whatever comes to hand.

Also, there are more parts than actors to play them so Dr Watson's acting abilities are called upon to play such roles as a Cockney floozie. Dr Watson is not, perhaps, a terribly good actor - though Dominic Goodwin, who plays him, fortunately is, and excels in his portrayals of "Dr Watson as the Prime Minister", for example.

The play has that glorious thing - a plot which seems complicated but is really easy to follow. Witty lines. Splendid comic timing.
Julian Finnigan's coolly rational Holmes is a wonderful foil for Dominic Goodwin's Watson.

Held in Trust Exhibition

In 2010 West Fest acted on concerns raised by members on the future of the Wigtownshire Educational Trust Painting Collection. It had been subject to options raised by Dumfries and Galloway Council which included the possibility of selling the paintings. At a meeting with Council Officials, West Fest were given a very fair hearing and were delighted to be advised that following consideration, the collection was to remain within Council ownership. West Fest was also thanked by the Council for its offer to promote the Collection to as wide an audience as possible. Much of it was indeed exhibited by Stranraer Museum earlier this year.

The Collection is now on show, with other works kindly loaned by Stranraer Museum, in the Ninian Gallery at the Visitor Centre in Whithorn.

In total twenty five pieces, including oil paintings, watercolours and prints from the early 19th century to the present day, are in the exhibition held to celebrate twenty five years of the Whithorn Trust.
The Visitor Centre is open daily from 10.30am to 5pm and the exhibition runs until 3rd July, admission free.
